The last seven days were bad days for me.  My experiment of spraying neem extract, mixed with two chillis & small ginger piece to weed out the pest underneath the leaves, resulted killing of my only two cucumber plants which was bearing tender cucumbers.  Also I lost bottle gourd & cluster bean plants.

  4. Hello Mr. Murali. I am experimenting on bottle gourd, bitter gourd, ridge gourd, pumpkin, cucumber, kakri and lady finger on my potted garden on the terrace. Mostly I am using standard 10-12 inch plastic containers. Am using one pot per plant, except for lady-finger which I am planting 3 plants per container of 8-10 inch size. I have also made a trellis using wires, coconut threads and sticks. How do u rate my chances of success in these containers of 10-12 inch size? I recently cultivated cauliflowers in these pots as well, but the cauliflower size I got was less than half-a-kilo. The cabbage is still growing, but yet very small. Tomatoes have grown aplenty in 8 inch pots, but my experiment with turnips didn't succeed as size reached was just about an inch in diameter each.....I planted the turnips in late December though. Would look for ur comments on all the above points.

    1. Mr.? Sorry for my late reply. I was away on my vacation for a week.

You have not mentioned the place where you reside. Secondly what type of medium you use to grow the plants. Thirdly do you have shade net on your terrace? All these factors are to be considered to get an idea where the problem is. Kindly provide the details.

Also you can post your garden experiences and doubts with photographs in "Chennai Terrace Gardeners" forum in facebook where experienced Terrace Gardeners will slo give their opinions. Pl send friends request in https://www.facebook.com/chennai.terracegarden

    2. Murali, I am residing in New Delhi where summer temperatures are upwards of 40-42 degrees. As I have mentioned in my last post, I am largely using plastic containers, although I do have a few earthen as well as cemented pots. I have filled all these containers with mud of good quality which was brought to my place by the local gardener from a place where digging work for multi-storey construction was going on. However, I have not mixed any fertilizer with the mud while filling up my pots and planting the seeds/saplings in them, and have only put a handful of "cow-dung" fertilizer after the saplings have grown a bit. I have already stored DAP and UREA and have used them in my winter crop, but it seems to have damaged the potted plants then as, on the advise of the local nursery, I had deposited a tea-spoon of UREA-DAP mix on each 10-12 inch pot earlier, which was too much perhaps. And yes, I do have a shaded net cover for my potted plants as the sunshine is too much nowadays, our flat being east -west facing. I will be adding u shortly in facebook, from where u can see the pictures of my garden which I have uploaded there. Thank u much.

  7. Namaskaram, Is it necessary to have the net covered on the growing plants? can you also help in making a home made fertilizer for the plants?
    Thanks, Pavitra

    1. In terrace due to weather proofing, heat reflects back. Shade nets help in reducing direct sun light. 50% shade net is enough. But don't put it permanently. Use it peak summer months. Rest of the months not required for most of the plants grown in South India.

  9. Hi Murali,

Your blog was the inspiration & driving force for me to start the terrace gardening. And came to know about the do it yourself kit from this blog & i just started growing plants in my terrace gardening 3 weeks back (do it yourself kit). Have planted tomato, Chilli & Brinjal. They are coming out good. I parallely had grown greens (sirukeerai, coriander & palak). I found the coriander seeds have not germinated in one container & when looked in the evening i can see more number of ants. Similar case with palak. In sirukeerai plant i see the leaves are half eaten. i'm new to gardening. Can you suggest what should be done to avoid it. Yesterday i tried spraying neem oil mixed with water. Yet to see the results. I have kept containers in 2 location, one in direct sunlight from morning till evening & another on the side path way of building under neem tree. Direct sunlight would be here for an hour or so. I thought to mention about the location as i see ants only in the container placed in walk ways & not in the other area. While i see some worms on half eaten leaves on the other location. Now planning to move all the 30 containers to terrace. Need your advice!!

  15. Iam from Hyderabad. Started a terrace garden with green shade. Presently having around 120 pots. But the results are very disappointing as the plants are growing but not flowering and yeilding any harvest. The soil I used in pots is Red soil + Cocopeat + Compost . Some cow dung and goat manure is used occasionaly. You mentioned that green shade is NOT required for the months after severe summer.. But I get 6 to 8 hours of sunlight on our terrace. How to address this issue ?
I shall talk to you for more info

  16. Hi

I have Planted bitterguard, brinjal, ladies finger, Radish, Chillies, Beans, Jasmine, Nithya malli, Thulasi and Paneer Rose in my balcony. All started Growing, but the stems were not thick and its bending on the soil. I have very little sunlight and not direct sunlight, only radiation of light. Is this the cause for the weakness of the plants or it requires fertilizers. Please help me. Im a newbie to this planting.

    1. Direct sunlight is important for most of the plants mentioned by you. But actual cause of the reason suspected by you may not be the reason unless and until one can see the plants. I suggest you to join Facebook forum "Chennai Terrace Garden" by sending joining request in the following link https://www.facebook.com/groups/chennaiterracegardeners/ and post the photos of your garden and plats to get better idea.

  17. Hi Murali, I am trying to grow tomatoes in my terrace. I am getting flowers but they are dropping. Read that chennai weather is not great for tomato. Growing media is cocpeat with some red sand and compost. I felt that they were too exposed to the sun, so I've moved them under some shade in the terrace.

    1. There are couple of issues to this problem:

      1. Close planting: Plants needs air circulation and better light for them to better grow and fruit. Close planting not only denies that but also spreads disease. Avoid over crowding and also prune the base branches which typically touch the soil.
      2. Tom is a self pollinating plant. Pollination happens typically between 10 am to 2 pm when the weather is dry. Good aeration allows the plants to sway freely there by helping the pollination process. However in humid conditions the pollen grains get stuck to the flowers and pollination does not occur. Hence to stimulate the pollination we tap the stem gently. once or twice daily during the flowering stage will do. However it does not help much during very warm humid conditions...
      3. Apart from crowding the other issue is the suckers. These are branches that form between the stem and a healthy branch. Some times the suckers grow to be a healthy stem bearing fruits. However they mainly suck the energy which is much needed for the plant to fruit hence the name. A typical sucker is there in your picture middle top in the Y structure. prune the Tom's suckers when the plant is 1 to 2 feet high. Keep pruning them constantly to redirect the energy to other parts which needs it more. One good thing is the over grown suckers can actually be cut and used to grow a new healthy plant. Watch few videos in the net on how to remove them.
      3. Next at this stage don't drench the tom daily. Do the drenching once in a week and the rest of the days do mild irregular watering (water on alternate period and day) but do not drench.
      4. Finally nutrients feed the plant with good nutrients on a 10 to 15 days basis not less than that. Some say the banana tea made out of boiling banana peel works wonders...I haven't tried it yet... all the best...
