Dear Friends,
After working 20 years in a Pharma Company in Northern States, I resigned last year to start my own business and shifted to Chennai. During my stay in northern states, I resided in apartments and never thought of gardening.
Here in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, I reside in an independent house and I have around 1000 sq.ft. of terrace space and recently I decided to use it for cultivating Vegetables though I don't have much knowledge about gardening. Further creating Vegetable Garden at the Terrace in Chennai is a challenging task looking into extreme heat ranging between 35-46º C during summer months and heavy down pour during rainy season.
I have been searching websites for various information about terrace gardening, seeds retailers, compost making, etc. for last one month keeping in mind Chennai climatic condition. I did come across many foreign sites about vegetable growing, but they were not much use looking into Chennai's climatic condition and our eating habits. Therefore the idea of creating this blog has come to my mind to enable like minded people, especially Chennaiites share their ideas/views based on local condition. Please share your views, experience, opinion and any information on Terrance garden to enable others to use their Terrace to cultivate Vegetables for not only saving money, but also get organic vegetables. Further looking into Diabetic and other health problems increasing day-by-day, gardening activities will help to stay fit and also get peaceful mind and happiness when you see the plant growing at your terrace.

Hi I want to know how to grow mudakathan keerai as I failed twice after planting the sapling along with the root and it did not grow and it dried away. I planted around 13 saplings with the root and all died. Please help. Thanks

ReplyDeleteNormally I ask for native variety seeds only but some times the seller sells hybrid seeds as country seeds. But in our Chennai Terrace Garden Forum in Facebook we promote organic native variety Vegs only.

Epsom salt is a natural mineral, discovered in the well water of Epsom, England, has been used for hundreds of years, not only to fertilize plants but to treat a range of human and animal ailments. But still it is debatable whether it organic or not since the salt purchase source may not be the natural one.
ReplyDeleteVarious pH meters are available in online stores @ 675 onwards.
For all pest attacks, first use jet water option in your hose pipe and wash it off. Then use nutsoap or kadhi soap water and sprey directly on the pests under and above the leaves. If it doesn't control then use 2ml neem oil in 1 ltr nutsoap or 3G water and sprey. Regular jet spray water, while watering plants, is enough to destroy most of the pests at the beginning stages itself.
Note: Neem or 3G spray should be done before or after sunset. Preferably after sunset. Jet watering should be done before sun rise so that water on the leaves gets evaporated during the day, which avoids fungal diseases.
Pasalai Keerai : check warms or Alphids and discard the affected leaves away from your garden. Then apply neem or 3 G spray.
